Styling Your Content

Modified on Fri, 10 Oct at 3:26 PM

This article walks you through how to use the formatting tools available in your website's Editor to style content within any Dynamic Text area. These areas give you full control over how your text looks—perfect for customizing content with headings, links, callouts, and more.

First, A Note About Pre-Styled Fields (No Formatting Needed)

Some blocks—like accordions, image captions, or section headings—may include pre-styled fields like “Title” or “Subtitle.” These are designed to match your website’s layout automatically and don’t include formatting controls.

Just type your content into those fields—your site’s layout will handle the rest to ensure visual consistency.

Basic Formatting Tools

In the toolbar at the top of every Dynamic Text area, you’ll see several basic formatting buttons. This toolbar works about the same as any other word processor. After typing your content, highlight the text you want to style and click any of these basic options:

  • Bold

  • Italic

  • Underline

You can also change text alignment:

  • Left-aligned

  • Centered

  • Right-aligned

  • Justified (stretches text edge-to-edge—can look great, but use with care because spacing between words can sometimes look forced)

Using the Format Menu

The Format menu contains more advanced styling options:

Font Color

You have several ways to choose text color:

  • A color wheel for full control

  • A list of brand-approved colors pulled from your site’s style guide

  • A preview of colors already used on the page

  • A field to enter a hex color code manually

Note: Want to limit color options to your brand colors only? We can disable the full color wheel—just reach out to our team.

Font Styles

This menu includes options that are specific to your website’s style and layout:

  • Headings (Heading 1, 2, 3, etc.)

  • Paragraph sizes (Extra Small to Extra Large)

  • Horizontal Rules (divider lines)

  • Buttons

  • Callouts

  • Subscript / Superscript

Let’s look at a few in more detail:

Buttons

To create a button:

  1. Type your button text (e.g., “Click Here”)

  2. Highlight it

  3. Choose a Button style from the Format menu

A preview will appear in the text area with a popup where you can:

  • Add a link (internal page, external URL, email, phone or file)

  • Optionally adjust button style or color

Callouts

Callouts visually separate blocks of text from the rest of the page. They’re great for quotes or testimonials.

Every website's call-out styles are unique, but applying a callout typically:

  • Adds background color

  • Enlarges the text

  • Makes the content stand out

You can still apply simple styles like bold or center-alignment within a callout. But depending on how your site was build, layering other font styles (like headings) may not be supported.

Headings

Headings are arranged by size:

  • Heading 1 is the largest

  • Heading 2, 3, 4 and so on get progressively smaller

Your headings may also include built-in brand colors—or you can manually set them using the font color tool.

Pro Tip: Set a style rule of thumb for your internal team like "Heading 3 in purple for all subheadings" to keep things consistent.

Paragraph Styles

  • On older websites, you might see a font-size dropdown in the toolbar to manually set point size.

  • On newer websites, paragraph sizing is responsive and lives under:

Format Menu → Font Style → Paragraphs

Choose from options like:

  • Content – Extra Small

  • Content – Large

  • Content – Extra Large

These styles adjust automatically for different screen sizes and devices.

Horizontal Rules (Dividers)

To add a divider line:

  1. Place your cursor where you want the line to appear

  2. Go to Format Menu → Font Style → Horizontal Rules (may also be titled "Divider Lines")

  3. Choose the divider style

Some websites include multiple rule styles based on color or thickness.

Other Formatting Tools

Here are a few more helpful tools:

  • Indent / Outdent – Housed under Format Menu → Indentation: These button shifts content left or right without using a list. "Outdent" will be grayed out unless you have first indented a line of text.

  • Bulleted & Numbered Lists – Click either button to apply to lines of text. Or click the small arrow next to the list icons to change the style (circles, squares, custom icons, etc.)

  • Remove Formatting – Strips all styles and resets text to the default paragraph style. This button lives in the main toolbar, but can also be found as the last item in the Format Menu.

Don’t Forget to Save!

Dynamic text areas do not auto-save.

Be sure to click Save Page (top right) every few minutes so you don’t lose your work—especially after making a bunch of formatting changes.

Wrap-Up

That’s everything you need to know about formatting content inside a Dynamic Text area.

Just remember:

  • Type your text

  • Highlight what you want to change

  • Apply your styles using the toolbar or Format menu
