SEO Tips & Best Practices for DIY Website Content

Modified on Fri, 10 Oct at 3:34 PM

At Cybernautic, we want every customer to succeed online—which is why every website we build is SEO-friendly right out of the box. But ranking well on Google takes more than just having a great website. It takes ongoing work—especially when publishing new content.

If you’re adding landing pages, blog posts, or service updates, here are several foundational SEO best practices you can implement right away to help your DIY content perform well in search results.

And remember: These are just the basics. If you want to maximize your visibility, drive targeted traffic, and reach more customers, our Web Marketing team can manage the more advanced and technical side of SEO and Google Ads for you so you can focus on what you do best.

Identify Your Target Key Phrase

Before you type a single word, ask yourself: What would someone search on Google to try to find this page?

That’s your target key phrase.

Example: If you're writing about custom built furniture and you're trying to target customers in Naperville, IL, “custom built furniture in Naperville” might be a great key phrase.

Your entire page should stay focused on this phrase or similar and synonymous phrases. Don’t try to rank for a phrase that doesn't match your content—Google will ignore it, and so will your audience.

✅ Pro Tip: When you use our SEO Packages, our SEO Specialists will research the actual phrases people are searching for to help you target terms with high traffic potential and high conversion potential. This is more of science than an art and our data geeks are really good at it.

Use the Key Phrase in Key Places

Once you've chosen your key phrase, make sure to include it in the following areas:

  • Page Title – This is what shows up in search results. Include your key phrase near the beginning.

  • URL – The web address (like yourdomain.com/custom-built-furniture-naperville) should reflect the key phrase.

  • Meta Description – A short summary of your page that search engines use. Make it clear, relevant, and include your key phrase.

  • H1 Tag – Use the key phrase in one main heading (H1) on the page.

  • First 100 Words – Include the key phrase early in the page to help Google quickly identify the topic.

  • Image ALT Text – If your page includes images, describe them using relevant words—including your key phrase if appropriate.

These signals help search engines understand exactly what your content is about.

Write Focused, High-Quality Content

Google loves useful, relevant, keyword-rich content. Here’s how to write it:

  • Keep the content on-topic with your target key phrase.

  • Use bullet points, subheadings, and short paragraphs to keep things readable.

  • Include synonyms and related phrases so the content sounds natural—not robotic.

  • Use your key phrase 2–4% of the time. This is called keyword density and it's measured as a rate that your key phrase appears when compared to all other content on the page. We've found that a keyword density rate of 2-4% is enough for Google to notice without overdoing it (which can actually hurt your ranking).

❗️Warning: Keyword stuffing (repeating the same phrase too often) can backfire—Google penalizes it.

Use Anchor Links Internally

If your key phrase shows up on another page of your site, link it to your new content. This is called internal linking, and it helps both search engines and users navigate your website more effectively.

Example: If your home page says "custom built furniture in Naperville," link that phrase to your detailed blog post or landing page on that topic.
